Atlantic City on a Budget

Kieron | April 1, 2020April 8, 2020

If you are planning a getaway to Atlantic City this summer you can have a great time on a budget! I go to Atlantic City almost every summer for a few days and really enjoy it there.

There are tons of places to stay in Atlantic City, many casinos like 카지노 게임 종류 competing for your business. If you don’t want to stay at a casino, there are plenty of small inns or budget chains like Comfort Inns to stay at. The Casinos want your business and offer loyalty cards, free breakfast, entertainment or even free play money for the casino with your hotel package. If you love to gamble, you will love the wide variety of slot machines and table games and so much more!

One of the best features of Atlantic City is free entertainment. They have free beaches – no beach tags needed to enjoy the surf and sand. Many Casinos even have beach bars so you can have a drink or a snack without leaving the beach. It is very convenient.

If you love to shop, you will love Atlantic City. They have built up awesome shopping experience. There is the very upscale Pier Shop (http://www.thepiershopsatcaesars.com/) which is a two-story pier mall filled with designer stores. I could afford anything in there, but it made for a very pleasant experience to walk around and take in the scenery. I am also a big fan of the Atlantic City Outlets (http://www.acoutlets.com/). I always seem to find a bargain there. They have stored for all of the best brands like Bass, Tommy and many more. You can get name brands for much less than you would in a regular mall or department store.

Another great feature of Atlantic City is the boardwalk. You can stroll up and down in the sunshine each day. You can pick up an inexpensive coffee or breakfast and sit on a bench in the morning. Or head out in the evening for an ice cream cone. It’s so pleasant to walk beside the ocean.

If you are looking for some cheap eats or drinks, Atlantic City has a ton of great little pubs to get a bite to eat at. My favorite is the Irish Pub (http://www.theirishpub.com/html.htm). The pub is the best place to indulge in tasty steak fries, burgers and good ale. They even have dinner specials like meatloaf and the pub is tasty, but budget-friendly pub to hang out in.

Atlantic City offers so much more than gambling and it really is affordable. I hope you stop by Atlantic City this summer, you will love it as much as I do!

Ohio Casinos Vote Will Help Detroit Casinos

Kieron | March 21, 2020April 17, 2020

Bypassing Issue 3 from the ballot yesterday, Ohio voters have told the state that they want Ohio casino gambling. The problem is that the passage of the marker on the ballot may, or may not, have dealt a huge blow to the future of Detroit casinos. As a political advisor and resident of Detroit, I have an interesting insight into this issue, this is why I did some research and jotted down all the relevant info on daytoto.com that you can read and share.

Many news sources in Michigan have been reporting that the acceptance of casinos in Ohio would hurt the gaming industry in Michigan. They have pointed to the fact that there are many residents that come up from Ohio to gamble in Detroit. While this is an obvious assumption, these news sources have not been able to give any kind of numbers that would support this claim.

On the flip side, these news organizations have not mentioned the fact that competition usually brings about improvement, especially in the field of casinos. Take Las Vegas as an example. With the fact that the Las Vegas area has nearly seventy casinos has not reduced the traffic for particular casinos at all. It has caused the casinos to do everything that they could to win over the business, and to keep it. It has caused the city of Las Vegas to continually evolve with trends to stay ahead of any competition.

As Ohio and Michigan continue to struggle with the downturn in the economy (which may, or may not, be over with yet), and the downturn of the automotive industry, new ways of gaining money, jobs, and tax dollars have been needed to be looked at. Instead of worrying about what money will be taken from the casinos in Michigan, Michiganders should be asking the casinos, what are you going to do to improve your product? What are you going to do to fill your seats?

One should also realize that casinos will not go up overnight in Ohio. It might take at least a year or two before temporary casinos had a chance to open. This gives the Michigan casinos more time to enlarge their regular client base, and to spend as much time and money as possible to point out to those that live in Ohio should consider gambling in Detroit. This also gives the Detroit area casinos a lot of time to plan their attack for once the Ohio casinos finally open their doors.

Instead of worrying about the fact that the Detroit area casinos are going to have to compete for gamblers from Ohio, Michiganders, and Michigan new sites, should be embracing the fact that the Detroit casinos will now be gaining competition. They should be embracing the opportunity that competition from Ohio casinos offers the state of Michigan.

Women Gamblers of The Wild West

Kieron | January 21, 2020April 3, 2020

The image of the Wild West gambler is a very romantic one that has been inculcated into the collective consciousness through multiple portrayals in movies and television shows, most notably Maverick. The image is typically one of a charming Clark Gable type, well dressed, great with cards and guns and the object of both the affection of the womenfolk and the outrage of the menfolk. Hollywood has missed out a golden opportunity thus far, however, because at least two of the most infamous gamblers of the wild west were women.

The most famous female gambler of the wild west was Alice Ivers Duffield, fortunately better known simply as Poker Alice. In the wonderland that was the untamed American west, Poker Alice was a queen among characters. Her career spanned two centuries as she didn’t head off to that great big casino in the sky until well into the 20th century. But it was as a key figure of the 1880s and 1890s that Poker Alice really stood out. And stand out she did: a female gambler with a British accent and a cigar protruding between her lips. Although she could hold her own in a saloon with any man, Poker Alice was smart enough to never touch the stuff while gambling. She was a woman of deliriously American contradictions; devoutly observing Sunday as a day on which gambling shouldn’t be practiced, but willing to shoot anyone (at least once fatally) who violated this sacred observance.

Poker Alice wasn’t merely affecting her British accent; born in England never saw the shores of American until she was almost a teenager. And even then she really didn’t see America since she was raised in the deep south to become a belle. It was only after immigrating past the mighty Mississippi River and marrying a Colorado mining engineer that little refined little Alice transformed into one of the most fearsome gamblers in the wild west. Her talent lay in a truly astounding dexterity, she could control and manipulate cards as well as any magician. As she perfected her technique and moved further west, she lost all her old world gentility and adopted the persona of the tough-talking broad with the cigar always between her lips. It wasn’t long before Poker Alice was hitting the big time, she even broke the bank at one casino, allowing her to go on a spending spree in New York City that would make Paris Hilton proud.

After all those dollars were spent, Poker Alice set her sights on the gold rush in the Black Hills. A true capitalist genius, Alice realized the great opportunity there wasn’t in mining for gold, but in taking the money of all the poor saps who were mining for gold. When that well dried, she headed back to Colorado and took a job dealing cards for the dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard, Bob Ford, known to history as the man who shot Jesse James in the back. Following that gig, Poker Alice headed to one of the centerpieces of wild west lore, Deadwood, South Dakota, the same town where another great gambler was shot by another little coward. However, Poker Alice was not to meet the same fate as Wild Bill Hickok. Instead, she met a man and settle down to raise chickens.

Poker Alice was almost 60 years old when her second farmer died, leaving her with a nothing but a chicken farm. So she picked up stakes once again and headed for Fort Meade. Just like she saw an opportunity to make money off poor saps hoping to strike it rich in a gold rush, Alice saw the potential of opening a saloon/whorehouse next to an Army fort. For a while Poker Alice did just fine selling booze, cards and women to the soldiers. Unfortunately, the soldiers weren’t quite as reverent toward the day of rest as Alice and one Sunday tried to force their way in for some aces and asses. It was at this point that the only known shooting death at the hands of Poker Alice occurred. She was arrested, put on trial and found guilty. They say good gamblers don’t rely on luck, but how else to explain the fact that the judge took sympathy and Poker Alice, resulting in her avoiding imprisonment. Of course, luck comes in two varieties and it wasn’t of the good kind when Alice met up with religious reformists who only took exception to her lifestyle, but especially to the fact that she had the gall to actually recognize Sunday as a day of rest. Alice was eventually forced out of work by these men and women before finally heading off to that big casino in the sky in 1930.

Visiting Biloxi, Mississippi

Kieron | January 20, 2020April 3, 2020

When arriving in Biloxi by automobile, we enjoy approaching from the east on US Highway 90 so that we may cross the Biloxi Bay Bridge. It is a 1.6 mile structure that from the east begins in the business area of Ocean Springs and ends at the edge of Biloxi’s casino district. When Katrina came through the area in 2005, it destroyed the bridge that crossed the bay. Construction on the new bridge was completed in just under 2 years.

Turning right after crossing the bridge into Biloxi leads to the Palace Casino and Hotel. On the gulf side on highway 90 is the Isle Casino and Hotel. Very quickly on the north side of the highway is Grand Hotel and Casino. About a half mile further into town on the gulf side of the highway is Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Adjacent to it is the Beau Rivage Hotel and Casino. Turning away from the gulf at Caillavet Street leads to the The IP Hotel and Casino. Closely adjacent to it to the east is Boomtown Casino (the only casino without a hotel). Retracing the route to again join Highway 90 and continuing west, the last casino in town is Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel. There are plans to build additional casinos both facing the Gulf of Mexico and facing Biloxi Bay.

Each of the casinos offers several dining options. Buffets, snack bars, seafood restaurants, and steak houses abound.

Hotels rooms range from plain to elegant and all are new since Katrina destroyed the previous facilities. The cost of hotel rooms vary based upon day of the week (weekend are more expensive) and style of the room. Costs begin at $59 and can range upwards into the $100’s of dollars per night.

Most of the casinos offer the same variety of games. There are machines scattered throughout the blackjack games, roulette layouts, and craps tables. Video poker games are not in the abundance that they once were and are being replaced by penny slot machines.

There are several historic tours of the area. The Biloxi Tour Train (locally know as The Biloxi Shrimp Tour Train) leaves from the lighthouse near the visitors’ center. A second tour is offered on a motor coach by Biloxi Historical / Cemetery Tours. This second tour company also offers a shrimping trip which tours the near coastal waters with demonstrations of shrimping and of wildlife in the waters.

At 1050 Beach Boulevard (across from the lighthouse) is the Biloxi Visitors Center. It contains an extensive multi-media exhibit to familiarize visitors with the history of Biloxi. Also easily accessible is the Hurricane Katrina Memorial which has a memorial wall dedicated to those that lost their lives as well as a collage of materials salvaged from the storm.

At one time Biloxi was known as a vacation spot for its beaches and for the mammoth Keesler Air Force Base that trains thousands of air force personnel. Today it is a bustling small metropolis of 45,000 people that is thriving with the tourists attracted by the beaches, casinos, and history.

Tom Custer, George Custer’s Lesser-Known, Poker-Bluffing Brother

Kieron | January 19, 2020April 3, 2020

If I say the name “Custer” what do you immediately think about? Long, blonde locks flowing in the wind during one of America’s earlier ill-fated decisions to enforce their culture upon an indigenous people? Or perhaps you aren’t quite capable of winning the National Spelling Bee and the image of an egg-based pie popped into your consciousness. George Armstrong Custer holds the fame or infamy-dependent upon your point of view of just who was the real victim at Little Big Horn and, frankly, I’ll bet you’d be wrong if you predicted my opinion-of being the person named Custer that most of us remember. However, it was George’s brother Tom who provides the history of gaming with the most exciting story. In fact, Tom Custer was notorious throughout the Wild West as one of the all-time great poker bluffers. That unique ability did not serve him quite as successfully at Little Big Horn, however. Like his more charismatic brother George, Tom Custer’s corpse was also mutilated by those “noble savages” the Black Hills of Dakota.

Like his brother, Tom Custer was an officer in the U.S. Calvary, though of a less rank to be sure. Captain Tom Custer resembled George Armstrong in one way, to be sure. Like the golden-haired, flamboyant West Point graduate Tom was also given to taking massive risks. George Custer bucked the odds on the bloody ground on which he fought the red man; Tom Custer bucked the odds over the poker table, often bluffing while holding absolutely nothing. If there really is such as a thing as an addition to be poker bluffing, Tom Custer had it. His typical tactic was to continue bluffing a pot to overflowing, secure in the knowledge that nobody could ever be sure whether his bluff was real or a fake-out.

One night Tom Custer made history during a friendly game of stakes poker when he received three spades: the 6, 7 and 10. Immediately, Tom dove into his standard bluff attack, raising the rest of the table like a man possessed. There was a rule to the type of poker that was being played that night; if a card that arrived courtesy of the opening deal got exposed, even by sheer accident or clumsiness, the player had to keep it. However, if a card was revealed during the draw was not allowed to be kept and had to be replaced. As it happened, Tom Custer did manage to draw that 8 of spades he was desperately hoping for but when he put his hand out for his second draw card he accidentally caused it to flip over. It was the King of Spades and would have fulfilled his flush. As the derisive and hopeful laughter of the other players rang in his ears, Custer carefully received the card that he was forced to take to replace the lost King of Spades.

Without missing a beat, Tom Custer picked up right where he’d left off, raising the stakes again. Of course, the general agreement was that he was simply attempting one of his patented bluffs since it was incredibly unlikely that he’d drawn six spades in a row. Using all this talents for the poker bluff, Custer pushed the stakes up until at last all the other players called, waiting in anticipation to see what suit the fifth card Tom Custer was actually holding.

The greatest irony of Tom Custer’s poker career as a man known for collecting pots when others folded with winning hands while he had nothing was that this story ends with the fact that when Tom Custer showed his hand, not only had he managed the unbelievable feat of getting six spades in a row after having to jettison one of them, he had actually managed to draw the 9 of spaces, giving him one of the most unbeatable hands in all of poker, a straight flush.

Mass Effect 2: After the Hype Settles

Kieron | December 19, 2019April 30, 2020

Bioware may not have been the first to develop a Western-style RPG, but they have certainly become the king of the subgenre as of late. Cranking out Dragon Age: Origins and now Mass Effect 2 in back to back quarters is quite the accomplishment and with good reason. The only western RPG with a hyper monster large than Dragon Age is Mass Effect and luckily, it lives up to all of that hype and more. Improvements from its predecessor and top notch presentation-Mass Effect 2 truly had no chance to fail.

Those unfamiliar with the original Mass Effect probably won’t have any issues settling into the sequel, at least from a game play perspective. The unreal 3/.5 engine is proven in over the shoulder shooters: find a chest high wall and plink away at your enemies as you advance. It’s an incredibly simple concept that works well even before you add in all over the science fiction elements inherent in Mass Effect 2. Controlling your squad still leaves something to be desired, especially when you start to play on increased difficulties. Over the course of a play through you’ll see a few squad members waltz out into the middle of a firefight and quickly get their butt’s shot off. It doesn’t happen frequently but when it does, it’s frustrating. That said, utilizing the micromanage of squad abilities does allow for a bit of depth. Positioning, taking care of them, utilizing abilities and reacting accordingly is rewarding when everything comes together. It also is routinely necessary to keep them alive as long as possible when playing on the harder difficulties, as the game has a tendency to downright cheap.

Depth also isn’t an issue here: you’re able to control the development of your squad mates including whether their abilities are ultimately heightened to more defensive or offensive peaks. While you’re leaping over those conveniently placed chest high walls be sure to keep an eye out for resources and research upgrades. One might have thought it difficult to toss exploration into fast-paced combat but it works well (albeit you might start to get sidetracked making sure you checked every crack) and it’s exciting to find a nice upgrade for a weapon you’re presently using. After a mission and you’re back on your ship you can put those finds to use as well as customizing your own look. Not only do you have access to your combat armor, but the casual attire you wear around the ship can also be altered. It’s a nice touch, especially if you want your Shepard to stand out. The depth of Mass Effect 2 also extends to its story of course. Whether you’re reading a bit of back story on the facility you’re in or listening to a laptop log of a recently deceased fellow, the game lends itself to empathy-at least as far as you’re willing to explore.

Playing as a male Shepard the voice was a tad bit underwhelming. Though, on further inspection this is because the squad is much more interesting. Some of the characters, such as Jacob, fall into a usual RPG stereotype, but it’s still nice to talk to him. Listening to Jack on her introduction mission will allow you to fully embrace that she is definitely insane. Interacting with Mordin is at first a whirling dervish but the uniqueness of the character truly shows. This extends to the rest of the squad as well, which quickly starts to feel as diverse as any Star Trek crew that was ever assembled.

Sadly, no game is perfect and fulfilling that fact is the resource gathering in Mass Effect 2. Upon entering the orbit of an unexplored planet your scanners will tell you whether or not it’s a good place for resources. If it is, you can activate the scanner (slowing your mouse speed considerably as you drag a circle over the planet searching for spikes in the scan) and send out probes to gather the resources. It’s cute and unique at first, but trying to gather all of the resources on a planet is mind numbingly tedious and downright boring. It’s the grind sandwich that RPG developers simply can’t seem to avoid. When it came down to it, I had more success randomly clicking the scanner across the planet than doing a thorough grid by grid search. At least cruising around the universe and reading the information on each planet is satisfying for fans that want a thoroughly fleshed out experience.

Without trying too hard Mass Effect 2 is easily one of the best games in recent memory and already has fans crying Game of the Year, even if the year is only about a month old. Excellent presentation, refined game play and a truly interesting cast of characters easily makes Mass Effect 2 the year’s first must-own title. Just get rid of the boring resource gathering and a few AI hiccups. To speed up the gathering process try http://idwinner.me. It is really easy to skip those boring in game processes making it much easier and fun for new players.

The Five Best Casinos Close to Cleveland

Kieron | December 18, 2019April 3, 2020

If you live in Cleveland, Ohio, you know that the best local casinos aren’t local. There are five good casinos that are not too far from Cleveland.

1) Presque Isle Downs – Erie, Pennsylvania (about one and a half hours away) 8199 Perry Highway

Erie, PA 16509 1-866-ERIE-FUN
or
(814) 860-8999www.presqueisledowns.com

Presque Isle Downs is located on I-90 Exit 27. The good news for Clevelanders is that they can take I-90 East all the way there.

The casino has live racing, card games and slot machines. The players reward card is a must have. The food is okay, but I wouldn’t recommend the buffet. I suggest the clubhouse, which has excellent drinks at great prices and good food at decent prices. The snack area is the place to go if you don’t want to spend much time.

2) Mountaineer – Chester, West Virginia (about two hours away)

1-800-80-40-HOT! (1-800-804-0468)

www.moreatmountaineer.com

Mountaineer provides links for directions on its website. The best way from Cleveland is to take 80 East to 11 South. The directions on the website (and most GPS directions) will tell you to get off at the exit for Downtown East Liverpool. That route has more turns and a rickety bride. Don’t follow those directions. Go to the next exit which is for route 2 and get off there. Make a left and go straight down the road until you see Mountaineer on your right.

The casino has a hotel and several dining options. The buffet is decent, but I’m not a big fan. I love the ice cream from the stand near the buffet. Big Al’s Deli and Pizzeria is where I usually purchase a quick snack. If I want to sit down then I go to the Gatsby Dining Room.

3) Wheeling Downs -Wheeling, West Virginia (about two and a half hours away)

1.877.WHEELING (943.3546)

www.wheelingisland.com

I’ve only eaten at the Breezeway Café. It had good drinks and delicious pasta. I have never eaten at the other places.

4) Rivers Casino- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (a little over two hours away)

777 Casino Dr.
Pittsburgh, PA 15212
(412) 231-7777
Toll Free:
1.877.558.0777
1.877.558.4777

www.theriverscasino.com

This casino is the least convenient in terms of location. The website provides different directions so that visitors can avoid some of the traffic on event days. I went there one time and I didn’t eat anything. I like it because it’s not that far, but it’s definitely not high on my list.

5) MotorCity -Detroit, Michigan (about three hours away)

2901 Grand River Ave, Detroit MI 48201

1-866-782-9622

www.motorcitycasino.com

No offense to Greektown or MGM Grand but it doesn’t get better than MotorCity. The Grand River Deli is the place to grab a snack. The corned beef sandwich is delicious.

The Best Betting Systems In The Market

Kieron | December 17, 2019April 3, 2020

The practice of betting has been in existence for quite sometime now but the truth is that there are very few people who have really succeeded and have won real money. There is nothing wrong with the system but the actual problem is with the better. They just do not choose the right and genuine one among the betting systems and then blame the entire system for that. The following are some of the best betting systems available in the market and these are places where one can make real money.

The Martingale System

To be very honest, betting systems in the world are not designed to lose money and give away the entire jackpot to the gambler. But there are some systems which are genuine and want the better’s to win as well. One among them is the Martingale system. It is probably the most popular betting systems in the betting world and has been gaining popularity because it gives a very good chance of making real money as well. This game not only helps you make some serious money but is also very interesting and fun to play. The game is pretty simple. You just have to place your bets and follow up with double bets until you win a particular bet. Once you win, start again from the starting point and follow the same steps once more. There are no maximum bets in this game unlike other games and those who have huge amount of money at their disposal are perfect to play this game. And all those people who do not have that hard cash, can play with virtual money and still have some fun and enjoyment.

Oscars Grid Gambling System

Oscars grid gambling system is another very interesting game. This game is based on the constant gambler named Oscar who used to win money from these gambling systems in short amounts but on a consistent basis. This game is, like any other gamble, based on luck too but there are very good chances of making money only if you play for a shorter period of time and not rely on it for long. The game is pretty simple. One has to put his bet and if he wins, then he can place another bet. The new bet and the win from the previous bets are not related. If you lose, then you have to place the same bet again. This system is very steady and the most stable of the games. If you are lucky, then you can win some money if you play it in short cycles, its all up to your betting systems.

The Fibonacci Gambling System

This game is based on the development of the Italian mathematician called Fibonacci. This game is played by betting on the sequence of numbers which are basically the sums of the two numbers before the current number. This game is very steady and conservative in its approach and one can be rest assured that it would take some time for the game to wipe you out of all your money.

The 3 Keys To Value Betting In No-Limit Texas Hold’em

Kieron | December 16, 2019April 4, 2020

For years now the most popular poker game in the world has been the no-limit variation of Texas hold’em. The game has reached such a high level of popularity because it’s so easy to understand and has a level of excitement that works well for television. Even though the nature of the game makes being able to read your opponents a higher priority than stud or Omaha hold’em games, you still need a good technical understanding of the betting to turn a nice profit. Value betting is easily the most misunderstood aspect of the technical part of no-limit hold’em, and so to help you to further develop your game let’s look at the most important things to keep in mind when value betting.

First you have to understand what value betting is and what it means for poker as an economic system. If I have a better hand than you and place a bet that you call, then I have gained, even if you catch a lucky card later in the hand and I lose. The reason is that on average I will profit from your call. This illustrates the true meaning of value betting: to bet with the intention of having worse hands call.

Second it’s important to realize that when we decide to value bet we shouldn’t think about what our opponent has as a single hand. Instead, we should consider the range of hands he could have as a whole and decide if on average our value bet is going to be ahead of the range of hands that he decides to continue playing with. Essentially, we have to estimate all of the hands he could have in a situation and decide if he’s going to be calling our value bet with a worse hand than ours most of the time.

The third and possibly most difficult aspect of value betting to understand for new players is that if you think a value bet is going to be only slightly profitable, it could be best to just check to your opponent. The reason for this is that sometimes, especially if your opponent is aggressive or has a particularly weak range of hands, checking to your opponent can be even more profitable than a value bet. This seems anti-intuitive, but is true because in these types of situations it’s likely your opponent will be willing to put money in the pot with a lot of bluffs instead of the relatively strong range of hands he will call facing a bet. This way he or she will be putting another bet in the pot but with more hands that you beat.

As human beings, we’re naturally curious creatures. That’s why in general we’ll always tend to make more bad calls than we make bad folds in poker because we are hardwired to want to know what our opponent has. This is why the best way to beat the vast majority of players in poker will always be to value bet them a lot.

Texas Hold’Em Is King

Kieron | December 15, 2019April 4, 2020

It’s Friday night, after a long day at work, and its time to be entertained with some exciting, dramatic television. The pop corn is popped, the drinks are nearby and the remote is in hand. With anticipation the program is selected-the latest movie on DVD? No, it’s the World Series of Poker’s “No Limit Championship”, where characters, drama and tension abound in the popular spectator sport of No Limit Texas Holdem.

That’s right, spectator sport.

Poker has always enjoyed a certain amount of celebrity. From its popular origins on Louisiana riverboats and frontier town saloons of the old west to Rat Pack frequented gambling casinos in Las Vegas, the ultimate “vying card game” has risen to grab Neilson ratings and celebrity players, such as in Bravo’s show “Celebrity Poker Showdown.”

In the Mel Gibson movie Maverick, an enormous poker competition was held aboard a riverboat, with scores of the genteel folk standing by to watch the games. Pulling for the underdogs, cheering on the winners; the emotion is all the same regardless of the game. Being right there, watching the chutzpah pay itself out on the green felt table and counting the chips along with the players, can be a rush in and of itself. But how could the excitement of watching poker ever translate to the screen?

Two factors made it so. First, the right game had to be the vehicle, and No Limit Holdem had all the right elements. The name says it all, No Limit. In most poker games limits are set on the amount you are allowed to bet at any one time, keeping things friendly. In Texas Holdem anyone, at any time, could shove a mountain of chips into the pot, calling everyone in the had out. How popular is this move amongst viewers? Judging by the number of times audience members shout “All in!” (which is what betting everything is called) during Celebrity Poker Showdown, it’s pretty popular.

The second factor is technology; by adding small lipstick cameras to the playing table, it allows viewers to see what normally only the individual player would see; his two pocket cards.

Holdem is also a community game, and once the rules are understood, fairly easy to follow. Each player is dealt two pocket cards face down; five cards are played in the center of the table, face up, and the goal is to make the best hand of five cards out of the seven available (two pocket and five community cards.)

In tournament play the ante (the amount each player is required to put in the pot before the round begins) and the blinds increase every twenty minutes or so, which means that even the most conservative player will soon find their cache of chips dwindling. The little and big blinds are required bets made by the two players to the left of the dealer, who’s position is marked by a small plastic chip, which makes its way clockwise around the table.

Normally a spectator would have to make do with watching the community cards and the players (which, admittedly, is already very entertaining) but with the lipstick cameras showing the pocket cards, spectating goes to the next level. Playing along is possible as viewers will back-seat play the hands, cheering and jeering the decisions made by the folk at the table.

Other elements come into play with Holdem’s popularity. The lingo makes it fun, with the first three cards in the community pool called the flop, the next card called the turn and the last the river. Rounding out the uniqueness of the sport are the players, who routinely wear sunglasses to hide their tells (subtle mannerisms that pros can read to guess how a person will play), funky hats or shirts to throw off the competition and generally act up.

Could the argument be made that, while watching players risk tons of cash in chip form can be dramatic enough, there is no plot, no story to engage the viewers? Sure, but the 2003 winner of the World Series of Poker No Limit Hold’em Championship would prove the opposite is true. Chris Moneymaker, then 27, made a name by teaching himself, and then excelling in, internet poker. This new comer slapped down his $40 entry fee and then, to the chagrin of the grizzled vets around the tables, walked away with the $2,500,000 dollar prize.
